TRENTON ? City Council approved a new law director, postponed a vote slashing Mayor Tony Mack's salary and formed an investigative committee to demand information on the city's new presidential bust at a busy meeting last night.
Caryl Amana, the city's former law director from 2000 to 2004, has the job again after being appointed to lead the law department by council last night.
Amana previously served under Mayor Doug Palmer but was not reappointed at the end of her term. She will replace acting law director Walter Denson, who was previously appointed the director of housing and economic development before moving to the law department.
Amana was vetted and approved by the state Department of Community Affairs, the state agency that retains oversight of city hires and spending.
Council had to push off a vote on an ordinance cutting Mack's salary to $65,000, down from $126,460, after city clerk Leona Baylor told council the public hearing on the ordinance had not been properly advertised as required by law.
The final vote will now take place Feb. 7. Council members voted 4-3 to introduce the measure earlier this month, but must find five votes to block a veto from Mack.
Council also unanimously approved the formation of an investigatory committee to look into the creation of a bust of President Barack Obama recently installed in City Hall. Questions have swirled over the bust's funding and the process of commissioning the faux bronze statue.
Council asked mayoral aide Anthony Roberts, who headed a committee in charge of the bust, to appear before at a meeting to answer questions two weeks ago, but he called in sick that day.
Councilman Zachary Chester said because council had not heard back from Roberts, it was time to subpoena him and documents related to the Obama bust.
