EDMONTON?-?

The Edmonton Oil Kings might want to consider starting games by drifting a soft shot at their own net, so their goaltender can register a save.

Given the number of times Laurent Brossoit has allowed the first shot he sees to get past him this season, it might be a good idea to get it out of the way early.

Brossoit did it again last night, although there wasn?t much the Oil Kings goaltender could do about it.

Prince Albert Raiders forward Leon Draisaitl opened the scoring, converting a Mike Winther centring feed just over four minutes into the contest. The Raiders took a 2-0 lead on their fourth shot of the game.

Things didn?t get much better for Brossoit in the second period, as the Raiders tallied again early in the frame. By the midway point of the game, the visitors were up 3-0 despite being outshot 23-8.

Keeping busy

With the world junior championships just around the corner and the NHL currently in deep freeze, Tampa Bay Lightning GM Steve Yzerman made a stop in Edmonton after attending the final two games of the Subway Super Series in B.C.

Yzerman, who was the executive director of Canada?s entry in the 2010 Olympics, was keeping an eye on a number of candidates for the upcoming WJC training camp.

There were no Lightning draft picks taking part in the game.

The Oil Kings had six players participate in the Super Series, which served as part of the evaluation process for the world junior team. Forward Mitch Moroz was also invited to take part, but an injury kept him out of the two games against Russia.

Prince Albert Raiders forward Mark McNeill also took part in the series for Team WHL.

Homecoming

David Musil was traded to the Edmonton Oil Kings nearly three weeks ago, but it took until last night for the defenceman to make his home debut.

The 19-year-old was acquired from the Vancouver Giants in exchange for forward Mason Geertsen and Edmonton?s first-round pick in the 2013 WHL bantam draft.

Musil was in the Giants lineup when the Oil Kings played host to Vancouver in late October before departing on a six-game road trip through Saskatchewan and B.C.

The Delta, B.C., product was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the second round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

He is the third defenceman on the Oil Kings roster whose father played in the NHL, joining Keegan Lowe and Griffin Reinhart.

Welcome back, Gernat

Martin Gernat was back at Rexall Place Saturday after arriving from the Czech Republic following shoulder surgery.

The Oil Kings defenceman took in his first game of the season from the press box, which is where he?ll be spending the majority of his time while recovering from shoulder surgery back home in the Czech Republic.

The Oilers draft pick is hoping to be back on the ice practising with the Oil Kings in a couple of weeks.

Wait and see

Travis Ewanyk?s Team Canada audition came to an early end Wednesday when he sustained a knee injury in Game 5 of the Subway Super Series.

The Oil Kings forward is hoping the prognosis is positive and that he can get back on the ice before Hockey Canada announces the list of invitees for the world junior camp.

The list will be released on Dec. 3, with the tournament opening in Ufa, Russia on Boxing Day.

Last year a shoulder injury forced Ewanyk to miss 61 games with the Oil Kings and an opportunity to play with Team Canada.

On a roll

Mark McNeill is picking a good time to get hot with Team Canada training camp invitations set to be mailed out. The Raiders forward went into last night?s game as the reigning WHL player of the week after notching eight points in three outings.

McNeill, 19, entered last night as P.A.?s leading scorer, with eight goals and 17 assists in 22 games. He also scored the shootout goal in Team WHL?s 1-0 victory over Russia Wednesday in Vancouver.
